First iPhone Trojan discovered
Yup, the first trojan for the Apple iPhone has been discovered by security vendors F-Secure and Symantec. The first warnings about the Trojan were posted on Saturday on the iPhone modification forum ModMyiFone.com, said security vendor F-Secure.
The Trojan is variously known as “iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep”, or “113 prep”, purported to be a download of the leaked iPhone firmware 1.1.3.
The malicious code(trojan) did nothing except displaying a word “shoes” when installed. When a user attempted to uninstall the malicious code, the application removed files from the /bin folder, breaking “Erica’s Utilities†package such as sendfile and overwrote OpenSSH, the encryption protocol.
Cox wrote, “This is technically the first Trojan horse seen for the iPhone; however, it does appear to be more of a prank than an actual threat. The impact of uninstalling the ‘Trojan’ would appear to be an unintended side effect.”
According to Symantec the users who are affected need to uninstall “113 prep†and then reinstall the broken files and applications. No lasting damage to the iPhone has been reported yet.
Future infections are unlikely, as the site distributing the trojan has been taken down.
