Las Vegas (NV) - Microsoft has unveiled a new update to its mobile operating system, Windows Mobile 6.1. The improved version of the platform designed for mobile phones and PDAs brings a handful of enhanced features, most notably a new tailored Internet browser.
A full custom version of Internet Explorer 6 is now included with the operating system, allowing better control of Web pages using mobile controls.
This makes it easier to access multimedia content presented in Flash and Microsoft’s own Silverlight media streaming. In addition, the 6.1 update improves the navigation and ease of access of other phone content and applications.
3G iPhone in May?
Bank of America is predicting the release of the widely anticipated 3G iPhone in May 2008. There has been a lot of buzz around the 3G iPhone this year, and of course Apple is not going to give us any hints, but according to this article from Reuters, Bank of America’s “channel checks” told analyst Scott Craig that Apple is planning on 3 million 3G iPhones slated for May followed by 8 million more in Q3 2008.
That is a pretty aggressive strategy for Apple, and if true, the iPhone will firmly clench a foothold in the smartphone market.
Safari 3.1 Vulnerabilities Found
Secunia has already found two “highly critical” vulnerabilities for the recently released Safari 3.1 web browser that can result in execution of arbitrary code. The first is due to an improper handling of the buffer for long filenames of files being downloaded, and the second can result in successful spoofing of websites and phishing.
This is not good news for Apple following the enormous outcry on how Apple chose to roll out Safari 3.1 via their iTunes bundled updating software. Mozilla CEO John Lilly was not happy about this method either. There are a reported 500 million iTunes users.
Another interesting find is in the Apple EULA (End User Licensing Agreement) that you must accept before installing Safari…Apple’s Safari license says that users are permitted to install the browser on no more than “a single Apple-labeled computer at a time.” This means that if you install Safari for Windows on a Windows PC, you’re violating the license.

MAC what are you doing to me???Â
Stop that right now!
Netflix Offering Customer Credits After Monday Outage
Netflix will offer its customers a 5 percent credit, after a glitch took down the DVD rental company’s entire Web site Monday. “We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused,” Netflix said in a Wednesday e-mail to customers. “We will issue a 5 percent credit to your account in the next few days. You don’t need to do anything. The credit will be automatically applied to your next billing statement.”The Netflix Web site unexpectedly went down Monday morning, and was inaccessible for most of the day. The outage also affected the company’s shipping schedule, so DVDs that were scheduled to ship on Monday did not go out until Tuesday.Netflix spokesman Steve Swasey declined to provide additional details on what caused the outage, but said it was “unprecedented” and an “extreme anomaly.”
“There was no pressure, no call for” the credit, Swasey said. “We just thought it was the right thing to do.” He declined to reveal how much the credit might cost the company.
Though one member took to the Netflix community forum to complain about the outage, most members did not seem overly concerned.
Microsoft offering Free Support for Vista SP1
Microsoft is trying to calm customers currently having difficulty with Vista Service Pack 1. It seems as though a lot of folks have been having trouble with the first official Service Pack for Windows Vista, and complaints are stacking up at the official Vista blog.
Support is offered to anyone that has a legitimate Vista license including OEM licenses. This type of support has previously only been available to customers that have purchased a retail license, while those who already have the operating system pre-loaded on their machines are referred directly to the OEM or reseller and are charged a nominal fee. Microsoft is making an exception with Vista SP1. The free support is offered through March 18th 2009.
This support is offered via email to a special SP1 support address, or an online chat system. MSDN and TechNet subscribers, software assurance customers, and members of the Microsoft Partner Program will also have phone support available to them.
